Jay Gatsby

Jay Gatsby: he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen-year-old boy would be likely to invent

The Speech and Dialogue The way Gatsby presents his words gives us an idea on how he’s construct his new identity and how he’s taught himself to do so. In chapter 9 during a conversation with jays father, Nick is shown a daily schedule written when he was a child.in which states “practice elocution, poise and how to attain it” this refers to the skill of clear and expressive speech. This gives us an idea of how Gatsby has trained himself to speak in this manner and shows his character development.

Nick also noticed that the way Gatsby speaks and uses his vocabulary seems almost forced as if its not natural, mentioning that he got a “strong impression he was picking his words with care” whilst speaking for the first time with Gatsby. This gives away Gatsby identity because it sounds too forced and unnatural.

The Setting of the ‘Stage’

“This feels a regular Belasco”. David Belasco was a theatrical producer and playwright known for his lavish sets. Belasco was known for putting so much time and detail into his set it seemed far too real. This indicates that Gatsby is simply putting on a show to reflect the person he’s created when in reality its all an illusion to cover up his past.

Another setting is the house. Gatsby’s mansion represents his wealth and success, he’s throwing big parties to grasp daisy’s attention. The house that was once seen as a symbol of success is now a symbol of his true loneliness and failure to pursue his only happiness being Daisy.

The Costume

James Gatz has into Jay Gatsby by wearing lavish clothing.. suits, sweaters, expensive footwear and accessories including pocket watches and bowties. Gatsby is always seen wearing very formal clothing giving off the appearance as wealthy a man and shows his belonging to the upper class, this is done intentionally to disguise himself and conceal his true identity.

-“They’re such beautiful shirts,” she sobbed, her muffled in the folds. “It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such beautiful shirts.”

This is Daisy’s reaction to the shirts demonstrates both her regret and her materialism. This moment happens during her first visit to Gatsby’s mansion. By the time she reaches Gatsby’s bedroom where the shirts are, she is overwhelmed to see the wealth of the man she left behind. She realises she chose the wrong man because Gatsby is now rich. This just shows how Gatsby has made his new persona from being poor and how daisy has noticed that regarding his outfits and clothing style.

The Backstory

A lot of rumours are shared about Gatsby past. rumours have speculated that he’s a spy for the germans , he never actually went to Oxford and according to Catherine “he Killed a man once..” . Gatsby goes to extreme measure to ensure his backstory is told the way he wants it to be portrayed. This just goes to show how guarded he is of his past life. As James developed himself into Gatsby he was fearful of his back story to ever be mentioned so he developed rumours about his past to confuse people about the truth.

The Props

F . Scott Fitzgerald uses many props throughout the story to show how Gatsby life has been constructed. First, it symbolizes money, materialism and high social position, such as Doctor T. J. Eckleburg’s enormous yellow eyes located watching over the Valley of Ashes and Gatsby’s golden tie worn to impress daisy … , it also represents destructive power and death, such as the yellow leaves mentioned in the scene which resultes in his death as well as Gatsby’s yellow car that kills myrtle Wilson. Gatsby characters is associated with yellows because the persona he has created of himself has resulted in unfortunate events which could’ve potientlaly been avoided

The white care presented to the police officer is a prop used to symbolise Gatsbys life is a lie. Gatsby and Nick are caught by a police officer, a white card is shown to the officer and they are let off with an apology. The card symbolises Gatsby’s dishonesty. he uses this card to keep himself out of trouble with the law stating to nick that the commissioner owed him for a favour, Nick thought of this as a very suspicious and vague answer. white is the colour presented as corruption. The card alongside other white details in the novel represent nobleness and purity but for Gatsby it represents corruption, corrupt being a perfect word to describe gatsbys life.

  1. Hi Charlotte,

It looks like you have been busy with this! Good work.

A couple of things for you to think about:

    – Connect your ideas to the concept of constructing an identity. Reflect on how all of these elements seem a little forced and why that might be, given that we know Gatsby has created an entire life and persona for himself out of nothing. You begin to do this sometimes but do not quite finish it off.

Well done for using some quotes! Make sure you really explain how they support your observations and that you have a couple for each section to support your ideas.

Begin to reflect on the purpose of all of these things- why do you think Fitzgerald (the author) wrote this character like this? This is called considering the author’s purpose. Have a crack at it for each category.

Let me know if you want to talk through any of this feedback!

    Mrs. P
